Mapas, historias y fotos: Geolocalizaciones de Rutas Culturales de la Comunidad Valenciana con Jose Gregorio Lepervanche Valencia.
Esta charla incluye la integración de nuevas fotos, mapas e historias recopiladas en viajes recientes compartidos en las plataformas de ArcGIS Story Maps, StoryMap JS y Google Maps. El énfasis es mostrar el uso de las fotos para documentar y geolocalizar puntos de interés cultural. La presentación incluye un breve recorrido por los Story Maps de: Rutas Marítimas de Sefardíes, Camino del Cid y del Santo Grial, Rutas de Castillos, Torres y Murallas, Rutas de Iglesias, Ermitas y Santuarios, Rutas de Jaume I, Ruta de Juderías, Ruta del Río Júcar y Ruta de la Antigua Muralla de Valencia.

Un investigador sitúa en internet las 19 juderías de la C. Valenciana
Un sefardita difunde por la red la ubicación de esos antiguos barrios y huellas hebreas totalmente olvidadas incluso en el callejero
Adentrarse en el legado judío en la Comunitat Valenciana ya es muy fácil a golpe de clic gracias al trabajo que ha realizado José Gregorio Lepervanche Valencia, un descendiente de sefardíes de la familia Semah de Valencia que hace un par de años regresó a España tras recuperar la nacionalidad de sus antepasados y se afincó en el Port de Sagunt. Con su dominio de la tecnología, este profesor de Sistemas de Información en varias universidades de los EEUU ha geolocalizado 19 juderías grandes y pequeñas en la Comunidad Valenciana, así como 100 en la Península Ibérica, incluyendo fotos actuales que permiten hacerse una idea de la huella que dejaron y que se mantiene de muy diversas maneras.
Esto permite identificar fácilmente en internet los antiguos barrios y cementerios judíos, aunque en algunos lugares no quede ni rastro de ellos y hasta ahora estuvieran totalmente olvidados. Se trata de ubicaciones realizadas a partir de documentación de diferentes épocas, placas en calles, crónicas y artículos. Pese a que en muchos casos no hay ubicación exacta de las juderías, Google Maps ha aceptado la geolocalización de lugares significativos relacionados con ellas como plazas, portales o antiguas sinagogas que sí evocan aquel pasado.
Esta tarea que inició como parte de un curso de Turismo Cultural ha puesto de relieve grandes diferencias en cuanto a la preservación de ese legado en el día a día de las distintas poblaciones, así como en su difusión turística. En la Comunitat Valenciana, Lepervanche destaca el caso de Sagunt, única localidad valenciana integrada en la Red de Juderías, seguida de Chelva. «La de Sagunt está perfectamente conservada la trama urbana y tenemos un cementerio judío, con tumbas e hipogeos, además de un micvé. De hecho, era la única judería que aparecía localizada en Google Maps, pero yo he actualizado datos. En Chelva también se conserva muy bien la judería y, además, acaban de hacer una restauración».
Tras hacer un exhaustivo recorrido para documentarse y sacar fotos, admite «el gran encanto» de las calles de esos barrios que se preservan en los pueblos castellonenses de Morella y Sant Mateu, así como el trabajo que se está haciendo en Onda y Alzira para recuperar unos restos arqueológicos de esa época.
Más allá de esto, en algunas localidades ha encontrado calles con nombres o placas alusivas a la judería, como en Gandía, Requena, Vila-real o Castelló. Sin embargo, ve llamativa su ausencia en Xàtiva «cuando en el museo sí tienen una pieza de yeso con caracteres hebreos», afirma tras aclarar que en Alzira ha geolocalizado tanto la judería «antigua» como la «nueva».
Aún así, su mayor sorpresa ha sido recorrer València capital y Alicante sin hallar toponimia o placas alusivas a la antigua judería. «Yo creo que estos sitios deberían recordarse, por lo menos con una placa. Al menos, esto demostraría que hay interés por esta parte de la historia y sería una vía de suscitarlo a otros», decía. Dispuesto a «ayudar a recuperar la memoria sefardí», Lepervanche ha reunido todo su trabajo en una web, además de crear una página en una red social que ya tiene más de 600 integrantes. Su objetivo siempre es el mismo: Que eso que está en muchos libros se abra paso «en los caminos turísticos, entre la gente y la sociedad».
En este sentido, opina que Sagunt «es un ejemplo a seguir» ya que, «desde su entrada en la Red de Juderías de España, ha organizado eventos escolares divulgativos y lúdicos, como las exitosas gincanas para familias sobre Sefarad que recrean cómo era la vida entonces y la expulsión», decía animando así a fomentar «toda esa parte educativa». «Yo creo que a todo este legado hay que darle más relevancia a nivel turístico en la Comunidad Valenciana. Posiblemente hasta ahora no ha habido un interés tan profundo de buscar la herencia judía hasta que en 2015 salió la ley que concede la nacionalidad a descendientes de sefardíes; una ley que ya ha ampliado dos veces los plazos para hacer estas solicitudes, hasta septiembre de 2021, pero que ojalá los prorroguen más para dar más tiempo a que, ahora que estamos en pandemia, la gente pueda entregar toda la documentación».

Delving into the Jewish legacy in the Valencian Community is already very easy at the click of a button thanks to the work done by José Gregorio Lepervanche Valencia, a descendant of Sephardic Jews from the Semah family of Valencia who a couple of years ago returned to Spain after recovering the nationality of his ancestors and settled in the Port de Sagunt. With his mastery of technology, this professor of Information Systems in several universities in the USA has geolocalized 19 large and small Jewish quarters in the Valencian Community, as well as 100 in the Iberian Peninsula, including current photos that allow an idea of the footprint that they left and that is maintained in many different ways.
This makes it easy to identify old Jewish neighborhoods and cemeteries on the internet, although in some places there is no trace of them and until now they have been totally forgotten. These are locations made from documentation from different periods, street signs, chronicles and articles. Despite the fact that in many cases there is no exact location of the Jewish quarters, Google Maps has accepted the geolocalization of significant places related to them such as squares, portals or old synagogues that do evoke that past.
This task that began as part of a Cultural Tourism course has highlighted great differences in terms of the preservation of this legacy in the day-to-day life of the different populations, as well as in its tourist diffusion. In the Valencian Community, Lepervanche highlights the case of Sagunt, the only Valencian town integrated into the Network of Jewish Quarters, followed by Chelva. «The one in Sagunt, the urban layout is perfectly preserved and we have a Jewish cemetery, with tombs and hypogea, as well as a micvé. In fact, it was the only Jewish quarter that was located on Google Maps, but I have updated data. In Chelva the Jewish quarter is also very well preserved and, in addition, a restoration has just been carried out ”.
After making an exhaustive tour to document himself and take photos, he admits “the great charm” of the streets of those neighborhoods that are preserved in the Castellón towns of Morella and Sant Mateu, as well as the work that is being done in Onda and Alzira to recover some archaeological remains from that time.
Beyond this, in some localities he has found streets with names or plaques alluding to the Jewish quarter, such as in Gandia, Requena, Vila-real or Castelló. However, his absence is striking in Xàtiva “when the museum does have a plaster piece with Hebrew characters,” he affirms after clarifying that in Alzira he has geolocated both the “old” and the “new” Jewry.
Even so, his biggest surprise has been to visit Valencia capital and Alicante without finding place names or plates alluding to the old Jewish quarter. “I think these places should be remembered, at least with a plaque. At least, this would show that there is interest in this part of history and would be a way to arouse it to others, “he said. Willing to “help recover the Sephardic memory”, Lepervanche has gathered all his work on a website, in addition to creating a page on a social network that already has more than 600 members. His goal is always the same: That what is in many books makes its way “on tourist roads, between people and society.”
